Access to Tobacco Treatment for the Justice-Involved: A Call to Action

The issue of tobacco use disparities in the justice-involved population is a largely ignored public health problem. Attendees will understand risk factors for tobacco use disparities among justice involved individuals, components of the criminal justice system, and opportunities to address tobacco use disorders within the criminal justice system. Clinicians will understand tobacco use within the justice involved population as a health equity and social justice issue, risk factors for tobacco use within the justice involved population, and risk factors for smoking relapse upon release.

1. Apply collective knowledge of the topic of tobacco use disparities among the justice-involved.
2. Use a new, promising and evidence-based practice to address tobacco use disorders (TUD) among individuals in the criminal justice system.
3. Identify two systemic barriers and challenges to integrating TUD treatment within the criminal justice system.
4. Advocate steps to overcome systemic barriers, and implement policies, procedures, and best practices to improve access to TUD treatment.
